Cleaning your Venetian Blinds

Both blinds and curtains can become dusty over time. You can extend the life of your blinds by cleaning them regularly with a vacuum cleaner equipped with an upholstery attachment. If you feel like the fabric is deteriorating, it's time to consider replacing your curtains. If the curtains are lined, the only option is to have them cleaned.

If the curtains are washable, you need to be extra careful and dry the freshly washed curtains so that they fit the window.

Loosen the tape guides and remove the hooks and weights. If you are hand washing, use a mild detergent that does not contain bleach or other additives that can alter the natural color of the fabric. Pour the detergent into the water and make sure it is completely dissolved and that the water temperature is correct before putting the curtains in. Squeeze the fabric lightly and rinse thoroughly.

Cleaning Fabrics and Voiles

If you have mesh curtains or voiles, check the washing instructions on the label. They may need to be hand-washed with a neutral detergent. If you have left them for a long time and they look very dirty, you should soak them thoroughly before washing to remove dust. A final rinse with Glo-White or curtain bleach will make them shine. If you wash your curtains in the washing machine, do not spin them too hard. If you hand wash them, leave the water in a net or veil and wring it out. If you put it on a rack on a sunny day, it will turn even whiter. Do not dry it completely, but leave it damp and iron it cold.
